UBC Mathematics: MathNet FAQ [Lab Rules]

Question: What rules govern the use of these labs?
Author: Joseph Tam

Some of the more important rules are spelled out in the "Acceptable Use Policy" found here:

	Application documentation
These are the most frequently broken rules:
  • Don't eat or drink in the labs. Bits of food plug up the keyboard and liquid spilled into the keyboard will ruin it.
  • Access is allowed only to MathNet account holders. Guests are allowed if they are under the direct supervision of the MathNet account holder. Guests are not allow to use the account or any of the equipment of a MathNet member for their own purposes.
  • Using up more than one terminal, or tying up equipment (like the scanner) for an unreasonable length of time.

Along with these rules, it would be good if the following practices were observed:

  • Locking the door when you are the last person to leave the lab.
  • Following the rules in the print usage guidelines.
  • Closing the door when the air conditioner is in use; it works better that way. Also, air conditioners are like computers; they work better when you close Windows (Oh dear! Have I revealed my bias?).
